A predictable close is the foundation of reliable reporting. Use this as a starting point and adapt it to your business.

Before the month ends

  • Agree the close calendar and owners for each task.
  • Chase pending bills, expense claims and sales documents.

First three working days

  • Reconcile all bank and card accounts.
  • Record accruals, prepayments and provisions.
  • Reconcile receivables and payables control accounts.

By day five

  • Reconcile GST and TDS ledgers with returns and challans.
  • Review the trial balance for unusual balances.
  • Prepare the MIS and variance commentary.

After the close

  • Lock the period in your accounting software.
  • Note what slowed you down and fix one thing next month.
